Project Proposal Sketches

This post is based on a site specific proposal which was part of my public art project at Uni. My project proposal works with the context I have been exploring- the idea of the ability to “grow” from bad experiences.

The material I would be using in this project is plant-able seed paper made from recycled materials. This is an eco-friendly material that follows the three R’s- reduce, reuse and recycle. To make this, used paper is blended with water down to pulp, which is then mixed with seeds and poured through a sieve into paper moulds. After the paper is made, anything can be drawn or written on it before planting the paper in soil, as the soil is watered, the paper will disintegrate leaving the seeds to grow flowers.

The proposal is for an interactive community art/gardening project which would take place in Essex. The inspiration for the project was in noticing that many of the flowerbeds in the area are bare, and this is a wasted space for what could be both a decorative and eco-friendly space. I would be providing the handmade seed paper that is made by me, giving members of the community the tools to draw a picture, write a message, fold it into origami, or anything else they choose. Anybody could take part, families with children, artists or people with no art or gardening experience. Then, everyone would join together in planting their artwork in the flower beds, from which flowers would grow.
